Daytona Chiropractor Arrested Before Making his Escape to Paradise
Insurance Fraud, s — By Trace America on May 22, 2012 at 11:21 AMDaytona Beach chiropractor, John Wagner, was arrested before he could flee to the Dominican Republic this weekend. According to the Daytona Beach News Journal, 62-year-old Wagner was arrested and charged with illegally dispensing controlled substances, and healthcare fraud.
Last August we reported on a raid that had occured at Wagner’s practice, Wagner Chiropractic and Acupuncture Clinic, after several complaints solidified that controlled substances were being dispensed and charges of insurance fraud were being made.
During last year’s raid, investigators not only seized medical records, but also discovered financial records which found Wagner had a bank account in the Dominican Republic holding about $76, 800, or $3 million in Dominican currency.
Apparently, the FBI was kept in the loop throughout the investigation by a confidential informant and after a couple of round trip visits to the Dominican Republic, the FBI halted Wagner’s activity after they were notified he had bought a one-way ticket to the Dominican Republic and had planned on escaping to marry a prostitute he had met there previously.
“On May 15, I received a call from the confidential source,” FBI agent Groeschner wrote in the complaint. “Joseph Wagner planned to remain in the Dominican Republic for at least a month, and intended to marry a prostitute he met there before allegedly returning to the United States at an unspecified, later date.”
While Wagner’s original itinerary may have involved long days on the beach and spending money that was never his, the FBI and other law enforcement had different plans for Wagner’s “get away” involving restitution and possibly some jail time.
