Chevy not Heavy: Fraud Scam Leads to Jail Time

Insurance Fraud — By Trace America on June 29, 2011 at 2:38 PM

While Cobalt itself doesn’t float, a Chevy Cobalt apparently might; and in the case of a woman who was trying to get rid of hers, she found that out the hard way.

On June 27th Brett Whalen was fined $375 and sentenced to 1 1/2 to 3 years in prison for helping out Roseanne Baglio, a former bank worker.  Baglio tried to collect  insurance money after dumping her car in a lake.

According to The Buffalo News and Prosecutor Justin T. Wallens, in September of 2010 Whalen and Baglio both pled guilty to the scam and fourth-degree insurance fraud for the botched attempt at getting rid of her 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. She apparently owed more over $14,000 on the car.

After Whalen helped her dump it into Red House Lake in Allegany State Park on March 13, 2010, Baglio immediately filed an insurance claim on the car.

The prosecutor stated that a man who was taking his dog for a walk the next day noticed the car and then called authorities. Good boy, Fido!

Back in September, State Supreme Court Justice Penny M. Wolfgang placed Baglio on probation.
