“Operation Busted Wings” Nets 5 Arrests

Rings & Mills, Staged Accidents — By on April 6, 2011 at 10:35 AM

The Hialeah Police Organized Fraud Unit now has five more people to add to their growing list of arrests for staged accident rings, and according to a Hialeah Police spokesman, a sixth arrest is on the way. These fraud rings consist of staging car accidents in the hopes of obtaining insurance money from the “damages.” Perpetrators should be worried though, because police departments are becoming well aware of the problem and are cracking down on the culprits.

“Operation Busted Wings” is one of many attempts at stopping these rings from evolving. This investigation stems from what police are calling a staged accident that occurred on March 15th, unraveled by a combined effort of the Hialeah Police Organized Fraud Unit, NICB, and Allstate Insurance Company.

According to CBS News and officers who responded to the scene of the so-called accident, the damage that was claimed to the vehicles was found to be inconsistent with the evidence. Investigators determined that the actual damage sustained came before the aforementioned accident even took place.

One clinic owners, Trujillo, along with four of their accomplices, Fernando Fernandez, Jacqueline Sanchez, Amparo Montenegro and Suhail Abdel-Rahman, have been taken into custody. All six were charged with organizing and participating in a staged accident and filing a false police report.  The second clinic owner, Garcia, is still at large but according to police, he may have given police “the slip” that day, but “his days of freedom are numbered.”

Investigators said not only did clinic owners Gilberto Trujillo,27, and Yosniel Garcia, 38, pre-plan a number of accidents, they also supervised them from a distance. Trujillo is the owner of GLL Medical Center in Virginia Gardens and Garcia owns the Garcia Medical & Rehabilitation Center in Virginia Gardens.

And remember, as of now these are merely allegations, as there have been no convictions.  The accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
