FL “Con Artist” Learns to Respect Elders

4, Scandalous Schemes — By Trace America on February 15, 2011 at 4:20 PM

An alleged con artist, Alexis Carter, is now facing insurance fraud charges after authorities learned she was preying on seniors by accusing them of hitting her car and then ripping them off through intimidation and deceit. She also filed a claim with Geico as part as her scheme and they subsequently alerted authorities when her claim didn’t quite add up.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Leesburg Police began investigating 21-year-old Alexis Carter in October after an elderly woman identified her as the pregnant motorist who accused her of backing into her vehicle outside of a doctor’s office and demanded $125 for damages.  Police later discovered there were over a dozen other victims who fell for the same scam.

“Though all of the victims denied they had backed into Carter’s car, some nonetheless paid up because she had followed them home, pointed out small scratches or dings and demanded small amounts of cash.”

“In some cases, she wanted $100 or less for touch-up paint, according to records. In other instances, Carter claimed injury to herself or her toddler. If the victims didn’t have cash, she offered to follow them to an ATM or bank.”

After the scam went public, several victims between the ages of 75-90 came forward stating they had been intimidated and bullied into paying for accidents that never occurred.  Apparently, Carter even used her toddler to assist in the con.  In one instance, she accused an elderly woman of backing into her vehicle causing both injuries to her and to her child who she claimed needed stitches from the incident.  Assistant State Attorney, Hollie Worley, was eventually granted a subpoena for Carter’s medical records where it was revealed that her alleged injuries were non-existent.

According to court documents, Carter is no stranger to criminal activity.  Carter previously pleaded not guilty to organized fraud and retail theft after she was caught trying to steal a high definition TV from a Walmart located in Mt. Dora. This case is still pending.

Carter preyed on elderly and frail victims, and she is about to learn her cons won’t be taken lightly if she is eventually found guilty of these allegations.  If convicted of both the theft and the fraud charges, she could face up to 15 years behind bars.  Maybe a few years in the slammer will teach this con artist to respect her elders.
