A University of Wisconsin student was arrested Monday for allegedly murdering his mother for life insurance benefits.

According to The Badger Herald, Chase Boruch, a junior at the University of Wisconsin, was arrested Monday for allegedly killing his 63-year-old mother after she took out multiple life insurance policies listing him as the sole beneficiary.

“[Sally] Pergolski drowned in Moraine Lake in northern Wisconsin when the vehicle she was driving dove into the water, though evidence shows potential foul play since she had serious injuries not typically associated with accidental drowning.”

Apparently, 24-year-old Boruch, who received first aid training through the military, refused instructions from the 911 operator to restart CPR after he called in to report the accident.  According to Wisconsin Rapid Tribune, Boruch told investigators his mother had been knocked unconscious from the crash, but he was able to escape from the truck and pull his mother to shore.  However, when authorities arrived to the scene, they found several elements that didn’t add up with Boruch’s account of the incident.

“Investigators responding to the scene found Pergolski facedown on the shoreline and the truck in 2 or 3 feet of water, according to the complaint.”

Authorities later discovered $800,000 dollars worth of insurance policies taken out on Pergolski from such companies as Fidelity Insurance, American Life and Farmers Insurance. They also discovered a will for her that was notarized on May 7th, listing Boruch as the sole beneficiary despite having a sibling.  According to the criminal complaint, paperwork indicating that Boruch was no longer eligible for financial aid at UW was found in his apartment. Authorities also discovered several printed documents relating to lies, deception and how authorities detect fraud. Authorities have indicated that Boruch has been a suspect since his mother’s death.

The Madison Police Department received the notice of a warrant for Boruch and he was arrested at his home Monday without incident. Chase Boruch is charged with first-degree intentional homicide.  He is currently being held on $2 million dollar bail. As with every criminal allegation, the defendant is considered to be innocent until proven guilty.
