A Fargo, North Dakota father and son seem to have found an unusual way to bond.  The two are being charged with causing 37 accidents as part of an alleged scheme to pilfer from a multitude of insurance carriers.  According to the Grand Forks Herald, the duo is accused of targeting innocent drivers who were making lane changes in most of the accidents between July of 2008 and 2010.  Sead Mustafic, age 43, (the father) allegedly caused 27 of the reported accidents, while Mustafic’s 24 year old son, Senad allegedly caused 10.

“The driver was making a lane change at 15th Avenue and 48th Street South in Fargo.”

“She looked carefully before making the maneuver, but as she negotiated the lane change, another driver was ‘suddenly there,’ and a collision occurred.”

“The driver making the sudden appearance, according to court papers describing the crash, was Sead Mustafic, who filed an insurance claim after the November 2008 incident and was paid $4,278.”

“It was one of 27 traffic crashes Mustafic was involved in from July 2008 to June 2010, according to papers filed in Cass County District Court accusing Mustafic, 43, and his son, Senad Mustafic, 24, of defrauding insurance companies of more than $10,000.”

Joe Pittman began work on the case after obtaining existing files from Geico, one of which involved Sead Mustafic.  After reporting a claim in June 2009, insurance companies believed that Mustafic created further damage to his vehicle after the accident had occurred.

Pittman later discovered that Mustafic and son were connected to over thirty more accidents; most of which were caused by drivers changing lanes.  Court documents revealed that several of the crashes involved young women between the ages 16 and 30 and a mix of men and women ages 50-90.

Both men are charged with conducting an illegal enterprise and theft of property. Sead Mustafic is also being charged with felony insurance fraud and Senad Mustafic is being charged with misdemeanor insurance fraud.  Sead is currently in the Cass County Jail awaiting a court appearance, while son Senad is still at large with a warrant issued for his arrest.

Perhaps when this is over, they should take up less dangerous activities together, like fishing.
